Jim Flora, Learning the Blues, 1996, Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Flora, 2015.99

Art and music have inspired each other throughout history, both directly and indirectly. A well-known instance of their combined efforts is album art. After exploring Ed Ruscha's typographic works in the Museum's featured exhibition California Dreaming: Ed Moses, Billy Al Bengston & Ed Ruscha, select works from the permanent collection, and contemporary album covers from big labels such as Atlantic Records, students will illustrate their own album art on recycled LP sleeves. They will learn about the different approaches to two-dimensional design and commercial art while creating the cover to their own "Greatest Hits."
