Katherine Manthorne: Up the Andes and Down the Amazon

Sunday, April 2, 2017

Frans Post, Landscape with Chapel, ca. 1663, Oil on canvas, 17 1/8 x 23 1/8 inches, Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros

Join Professor Katherine E. Manthorne, Art History Doctoral Program, City University of New York and editor of the publication Traveler Artists: Landscapes of Latin America from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection for a presentation in conjunction with our featured exhibition Vistas del Sur. The countries of South America were little known to the outside world until the 19th century, when artists from Europe and the Americas were among those who explored the region. Motivated by curiosity and a spirit of adventure, these men and women created some of the most innovative landscape images of the age. In this presentation we follow these intrepid travelers up the Andes and down the Amazon to gain insight into these rich and diverse lands through their eyes.
