Newell Convers Wyeth, “One more step, Mr. Hands,” said I, “and I’ll blow your brains out”, 1911, Oil on canvas, 47 x 38 1/8 in., New Britain Museum of American Art

Join Museum docents to explore masterworks from the Sanford B.D. Low Illustration Collection at a tour of our current exhibition, Masterpieces of The Sanford B.D. Low Illustration Collection. This exhibition highlights 80 works by approximately 70 artists, such as Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, and Howard Pyle. These artists skillfully captured American values in story, advertisement, and cover illustrations for publication such as Scribner’s Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post. Other works demonstrate a fantastical narrative depicting otherworldly, primitive, or romanticized scenes, such as those by Pyle. These themes also prevail in several works from the Museum’s Robert Lesser Collection of Pulp Art, also on view.
