Mountains and Volcanoes
Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Frederic Edwin Church, Cotopaxi, 1853, Oil on canvas, 9 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches
Nineteenth-century landscape artists sometimes studied the science of earth to correctly depict geological phenomena, in order to create works that are accurate, yet aesthetic. Inspired by the images of majestic mountains and vibrant volcanoes in Vistas del Sur: Traveler Artists’ Landscapes of Latin America from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection, students will create their own geologically accurate landscapes!
