Artist Francisca Benítez at the NBMAA for an American Sign Language poetry workshop in collaboration with the American School for the Deaf
Join Chilean-born artist Francisca Benítez to learn about her art practice and her current research on Sign Language poetry. Benítez will explain how this literary genre has influenced the body of work presented in the Museum’s special exhibition NEW/NOW: Francisca Benítez.
Benítez studied architecture at the Universidad de Chile before moving to New York City in 1998. Her work has been shown at a number of international galleries and exhibitions, including the XII Bienal de La Habana, Cuba in 2015, The High Line, New York in 2015, and Museo de Artes Visuales, Santiago, Chile in 2013. Over the last year, Benítez worked as an artist in residence at El Museo del Barrio in New York City.
This program will be presented with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. Please email Kate Swanson at email@example.com if you, or someone you’re bringing, requires this accommodation, to better prepare Museum staff.
The program, held from 6-7 p.m., will follow a short wine and cheese reception from 5:30-6 p.m.
