Join us for a ‘Day of Learning’ with presentations by special guests in conjunction with the exhibition Vistas del Sur: Traveler Artists’ Landscapes of Latin America from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection. This program will feature presentations by Harper Montgomery, Exhibition Curator and Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at Hunter College, and Dorothy Bosch Keller, Professor of Fine Arts, University of Saint Joseph.
Harper Montgomery: Romance, Science, and Exploration: The Politics of Painting Latin American Landscapes During the 19th-Century
Learn about 19th-century artists’ fascination with landscapes of Mexico, Brazil, and other countries and about the allure of the Andes, the volcano Cotopaxi, and the great rivers of Venezuela during a guided gallery tour of Vistas del Sur. Explore what motivated European and North American artists in portraying Latin America and how it differed from what compelled the area’s local artists.
Dorothy Bosch Keller: Seeking the Sublime: Landscapes of Latin America from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection
This presentation and discussion analyzes how artists from various geographical locations, including North America, France, Germany, and Austria were drawn by the lure of Latin America and Mexico as a new source of inspiration in their quest to depict nature as sublime, exotic, pristine, and remote. These traveler artists were particularly interested in representing exotic botanicals, rare geological formations, archaeological ruins, grandiose vistas, pristine lakes, and more. Artists and their works selected for discussion will include Frederic Edwin Church, Frederick Catherwood, Camille Pissarro, José María Velasco, and more. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
