Family Programs at The New Britain Museum of American Art introduce children and adults to the varied world of art through guided tours, vacation programs, events, and various activities. Programs provide an approach to looking at and talking about art that enable people of all ages and levels of experience to enjoy art together.

Adult Programs explore the complexities of art through a variety of programs that are accessible to audiences of all levels. Visitors can choose from several educational formats—tours, films, lectures, gallery talks, and readings—that illuminate the connection of American Art to culture and history.

School Visits - School tours are designed to enrich school curricula and reflect the NBMAA’s approach of engaging students in dialogue as they look at selected works of art. Trained docents invite students to explore American art and culture through discussion and gallery activities that help students to look carefully, solve problems and evaluate ideas. Reservations are required for all programs and should be made at least four weeks in advance.

Teachers - Educators may participate in a guided tour, hands-on or studio activities, and discussions about integrating American art and culture into classroom learning. Participants receive resource matters that may include a slide set or CD-Rom, pre- and post-visit materials, reading materials, and an educator pass.

Docent Training - The docent training program lasts nine months, from September through May. Museum staff, docents and guest lecturers lead the trainees in the study of the history of art; the elements of art; museum education; and the study of the Museum's collection.

Internships - The NBMAA provides several internship programs.
