15th Annual Juneteenth Celebration
2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the Juneteenth celebration and the New Britain Museum of American Art’s 15th annual recognition of this event.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, dating from June 19, 1865 when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation (issued January 1, 1863) finally reached Galveston, TX.

This year the NBMAA will be celebrating the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement and honoring an unsung hero within the community, Mr. Alton Brooks, who has dedicated his life battling the war on poverty, the elimination of racial discrimination, and hatred. Brooks is a longtime Community Leader and Activist for the Greater New Britain Community.

This is the only party of the year that will bring you Art, Culture, History and Music in one night. Please join us in this commemorative occasion and community celebration, Saturday, June 20, 7-11 p.m. Co-chairs Ms. Paulette Fox, Georgia Porteous and the Juneteenth committee are working hard planning this spirited event that will feature music by United Audio Productions; soul food from Black-eyed Sally’s; wine, beer, soda and the never-to-be-missed Juneteenth Punch.

Dress is black and white semi-formal attire, and make sure you wear your dancing shoes.
