First Friday of each month from 5:30-8 p.m.
$5 for Museum members; $10 for non-members
$3 for beer and wine, soda is free

First Friday features live jazz music performed by local and nationally-known musicians, an opportunity to view the Museum’s premier permanent collection of 300 years of American art, gallery talks, art activities, a chance to mix and mingle with other art and jazz lovers, a selection of light hors d’oeuvres, and wine, beer, and soda.

Norman Gage Quintet

Listen to the vibrant Norman Gage on baritone sax with guests Kenny Reed on trumpet, Jay Williams on drums, Dezron Douglas on bass and Warren Byrd on piano. Norman, who has performed in the Hartford area for many years, recently has played at Trinity-on-Main in New Britain, Black-eyed Sally’s and the Hartford Jazz Society. Warren Byrd, piano, is a founding member of the Afro-Semitic Ensemble, a unique group that plays both in this country and abroad. He also is a globe trotter with Amsterdam based trumpeter Saskia LaRoo. Jay Williams, drums, is an A-team player and in demand in the Connecticut area.

“Art Car” Unveiling by Ted Mikulski
Artist Ted Mikulski will unveil his Art Car outside the Museum’s main entrance, come to see this unique and creative unveiling. Ted received his masters in architecture from Norwich University and there learned how to balance and create space. He fell in love with abstract expressionism and color exploration and is currently an adjunct professor at Tunxis Community College and teaches painting courses at Manchester Community College. He has been a professional artist for several years and has shown in galleries throughout New England.

Carol August Quartet

The Carol August Quartet will play selections from The Great American Song Book of Jazz and Big Band Standards. Joining Carol is Jonathan Chatfield on piano, John Mariano on drums and Igor Lepac on bass. Carol has gigged around New England and up and down the East Coast for the last 45 years. Carol finally ended up in Hartford after playing and living in the deep south for 20 years. Currently, Carol performs in the Hartford area at local venues, country clubs and private functions (known for taking requests at her performances)

Mary Ellen Lonergan’s Quartet

Enjoy the sounds of Mary Ellen Lonergan accompanied by Kent Hewitt, Jeff Fuller, and Ben Bilello. Kent Hewitt, piano, is a mainstay of the Southern New England jazz scene for many years, Kent never ceases to bring joy to both the well seasoned and the new jazz listener. He has recorded with such artists as Randy Brecker and Ray Drummond. He has performed with such notables as Clark Terry, Phil Woods, John Hendricks, Cassandra Wilson and many others. Jeff Fuller, bass, has an impressive list of credentials. He has toured worldwide and recorded with master saxophonists Lou Donaldson and Paquito D'Rivera. He has also appeared with Dizzy Gillespie, Mose Allison, Gerry Mulligan and countless others. Jeff also appears with the Latin quartet, Samba Brasil. Ben Bilello, drums, is a Hart graduate and studied with Jackie McLean and is a well known drummer on the Hartford scene. He is known for his cool style and has recorded with such names as Steve Davis, Jimmy Greene and has toured South America with Viva Quetzal. Mary Ellen Lonergan, Vocals: Mary Ellen has been singing her entire life in various genres. Realizing that jazz was her first love Mary Ellen studied jazz vocals at the Hartford Conservatory for four years. There she was steeped in the traditions of the Great American Songbook and the standards. Mary Ellen brings her own interpretations to the songs of Gershwin and Cole Porter, and conveys a story to the listener.
