Class size limited; $10/month Members, $20/month non-members

Ongoing Thursdays, 4-5:30 p.m.
Work with Museum educators and guest artists to learn about art materials, processes and production while getting a behind-the-scenes look at Museum pieces. You will work in Museum galleries, on Museum grounds and in the new Art Studio.

Pre-registration is required for each monthly session; enrollment is limited and varies per session. New sessions begin on the first Thursday of each month. We offer scholarships for New Britain students, so please feel free to ask if you qualify. MetLife Artist-in-Residence Matt Ryan

Matt C Ryan is a freelance cartoonist and comic book artist whose work spans from the comics industry to package design and advertising. His work can be seen in publications such as Pork 'n Beans, Bigger and Only in Whispers. Matt is also the co-founder of Free Lunch Studios located in Granby CT. There Matt works on his freelance work, teaches classes, mentors students from local schools as well as hosts special art events.

Aug. projects: Basic Perspective and Impossible Buildings
This class will introduce students to some of the general ideas behind perspective from vanishing points to horizon lines. Through our special exhibition, students will get a chance to look at the works of M.C. Escher to see how a master uses the laws of perspective to create impossible realities. At the end of the session, students will get to try their hand at twisting and distorting perspectives to create their own fantastical, impossible buildings.

MetLife Artist-in-Residence Nina Goodale
Nina Goodale studied art and design at the University of Hartford and at Central Connecticut State University. She holds an AA in early childhood education. She has been teaching art for nearly 15 years at Farmington Valley Art Center, University of Hartford, in her own studio, and through various schools and non-profit programs. She also has worked as a mural painter and interior designer. Nina resides with her family in Hartford and she is excited to bring her passion for art to the NBMAA.

Sept. projects: Tessellations
Drawing inspiration from M.C. Escher, one of the masters of tessellations, students will take on the task of creating these amazing interlocking images. Combining mathematics and art, this class will begin with basic structures and move to increasing complexity.

Oct. projects: Time to Reflect
Do you ever take time to just stop and reflect? In this session students will get a whole month of reflection! Finding inspiration in the works of M.C. Escher, students will take on the challenge of drawing the reflections they see. Using reflective objects and surfaces, students will work on some basic visual analysis and drawing skills to better their understandings of this complex concept.

Deb Wadsworth is a professional fine artist and art instructor who has been living and working in the Farmington Valley for over 20 years. Currently, Deb teaches oil painting, drawing and collage at the Farmington Valley Arts Center, West Hartford Art League and Wethersfield Academy for the Arts. Nov. projects: Mosaics
Inspired by the geometry and intricate qualities of Moorish mosaics, M.C. Escher created amazing tessellation and geometric works. In this session students will take a note from Escher and learn the art of mosaics. Focusing on color and abstraction, this month will show students how geometry and art can combine to create beautiful mosaic works.

Dec. projects: Possibilities in Painting
Drawing on the works in our special exhibition, WomenArtists@NewBritainMuseum, students will learn about the techniques and practices of painting. This class will explore the effects and possibilities of acrylic and tempera paints with an emphasis on color and experimentation.
