Session 1: Fantastic Fibers
July 13, 14 and 15
MetLife Artist-in-Residence June Webster
June Webster received her BFA in painting from the University of Connecticut. For the past 13 years, June has been a teaching artist at the NBMAA. She is a member of the CT Watercolor Society and the Northeast Watercolor Society. June is an award winning artist, recently adding “Best in Show” at the 2008 and 2009 Connecticut Watercolor Society exhibitions to her achievements.
Project: In this session students will look at the world of fiber arts. We’ll explore our special NEW/NOW exhibition featuring the work of textile artist Elana Herzog to gain inspiration. Students will get a chance to dabble in a few different methods and techniques in the growing field of fiber arts.

Session 2: Decidedly Doodles
July 20, 21 and 22
MetLife Artist-in-Residence Jim Brunelle

Jim’s primary focus with his clay work has offered more than twenty years of rewarding results from his relocated factory/studio in New Britain. Focusing on wheel thrown and hand-built decorative pieces, his work also includes drawing, painting and printing atop his car-port patio among seasonal changes. He encourages others through instruction at the Farmington Valley Arts Center, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, and numerous greater Hartford educational facilities.
Project: Have you ever caught yourself doodling on a notebook or scribbling the letters in your name? If you have, then this class is for you! Drawing inspiration from our special exhibition, Meticulous Masterpieces, students will create intricate drawings that show how doodles can be focused into beautiful works of art. We’ll discuss patterns, symbols and the power of imagination while creating unique pieces.

Session 3: Painting en Plein Air
July 27, 28 and 29
MetLife Artist-in-Residence Jim Brunelle

Jim Brunelle returns for another session. See session 2 for his bio.
Project: Little hands make big paintings on canvas and paper with acrylics and watercolors! In this class students will get to discover light, form and texture through the masterpieces in our collection. We’ll discuss works in the galleries, make art in the studio and even take our inspirations outside if weather permits.

Session 4: Square, Triangle, Hexagon
Aug. 3, 4 and 5
MetLife Artist-in-Residence Ilona Levitz

I.S. Levitz is a graduate of Vesper George School of Art in Boston. She also studied at the Trinity College, Hartford Art School and Wesleyan University graduate programs. She is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art” and her paintings are represented in both American and European collections. Levitz maintains a studio in Avon, CT at the Farmington Valley Arts Center. Along with teaching workshops in her FVAC studio, Levitz also teaches a Master Class in mixed media painting at the West Hartford Art League. www.islevitz.com
Project: Walk into the world of your own imagination and create new images inspired by the works of M.C. Escher. In this session, students will see how shapes can transform to create different creatures from birds to bugs!

Session 5: Oceans of Inspirations
Aug. 10, 11 and 12
MetLife Artist-in-Residence Ilona Levitz
I.S. Levitz returns for another session. See session 4 for her bio. www.islevitz.com
Project: The sea played an important role during significant turning points in M.C. Escher’s life. In this class we will draw inspiration from our special exhibition, M.C. Escher: Impossible Reality to explore the depths of the ocean. Students will discover how objects and creatures of the sea can inspire their own creativity!

Session 6: Discovering Escher
Aug. 17, 18 and 19
MetLife Artist-in-Residence June Webster
June Webster returns for another session. Please see session 1 for her bio.
Project: The imaginative world of artist M.C. Escher is quite an interesting and complicated place! In this session we will use key works of art from our special exhibition, M.C. Escher: Impossible Reality, to help us get into the mind of this artistic genius. From there we’ll find our own twist on his techniques and discover the creativity in our own imaginations.
