Medicine & Art Program

The program aims to develop observational skills and is intended for medical students, medical professionals, social workers and other professionals who would benefit from improving observational and visual literacy skills to enhance utilization of visual evidence in clinical settings. This program emphasizes visual analysis and observation-based learning. Trainees will learn techniques necessary for conducting a deep analysis of a work of art with a student group. The program aims to develop patient assessment skills while developing participants’ ability to use fine art enjoyment as a stress- reliever during medical careers. Medicine & Art: “Train the Trainer”

This program is intended to train museum staff and docents to administer the Medicine & Art program. The training aims to develop and improve observational and visual literacy skills to enhance utilization of visual evidence in clinical encounters. This program emphasizes visual analysis and observation-based learning. Trainees will learn techniques necessary for conducting a deep analysis of a work of art with a student group. At the end of the training session trainees will be able to lead a group of medical students in an observation-based discussion of art.

Specific objectives include:

• Understand the use of fine art in enhancing visual diagnostic skills;
• Learn a method for conducting a thorough visual inventory of an object;
• Be introduced to concepts of observation-based teaching and teaching strategies used in the Medicine/Art elective;
• Improve skills in analyzing works of art;
• Understand techniques for engaging students in analyzing works of art.
• Learn how to implement a Medicine/Art Elective program.
