Guy Pene du Bois (1884-1958)
Yvonne in a Green Dress, ca. 1938
Oil on canvas on board
Harriet Russell Stanley Fund - 1950.19

The languid look of the 1930s became more tailored at the decade's closure. The soft and rounded lines of the coat and dress are in contrast to the angularity of the sitter's face. The open collar reveals a brightly colored blouse that complements the darker tones of the rest of her outfit. The sitter was an artist herself, and therefore her sense of style may have been more bohemian than strictly fashionable. A small turban-like hat adorns her short cropped hair. Fashion dictated that women wore hats even indoors to complete their ensembles.
