Ralph Earl (1751-1801)
Gentleman with Attendant, ca. 1795-1796
Oil on canvas
Harriet Russell Stanley Fund - 1948.6

The costume of this gentleman is very similar in style to that of Sir Richard Arkwright. However, this gentleman's wealth is indicated by the elaborate, imported, figured silk of his waistcoat trimmed with gold braid rather than by the size of his figure as in Sir Richard Arkwright. The cotton mull frill at the neck and the cuff is so finely woven as to appear transparent. The gentleman has chosen to be portrayed with his attendant, a visible reminder of this gentlemen's status in society.
