Ana Mendieta (1948–1985) created groundbreaking work in photography, film, video, drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installations in Mexico, the United States, Italy, and her native Cuba. Often autobiographical, her work was drawn from her experience of displacement from Cuba, and focuses on themes of feminism, violence, identity, place and belonging.
