During a second trip to Italy, Maurice fell ill two months into his stay, undergoing prostate surgery and a difficult recovery. The dozen or so letters he wrote to Charles from Venice are filled with longing for his brother’s company: he told Charles that letters from him were his “only consolation” and that he yearned to resume the artistic life they shared, remembering that “we together were such a fine team.”
