Wood, an engineer, marine, and amateur artist, painted this image of the coast of Chile a year after executing a series of topographic maps of Valparaíso. The route he was traversing when he encountered this view follows the Humboldt Current, a cold water flow that moves north from the southern tip of Chile, up the west coast of South America, and toward northern Peru.
