View of the City of Caracas from the Calvary
, 1839
Lithograph on paper
Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros

Based on an image by fellow artist Joseph Thomas, Wood’s topographical view faithfully records of Caracas’s urban development and its surrounding area during the first half of the 19th century. The lithograph, printed in London by Ackermann in 1839, shows Caracas at the foot of the peak of El Ávila. At the bottom of the sheet the city’s principal civil and religious buildings are numbered for easy identification.
