Carrie Mae Weems Bio
Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953) is a socially motivated artist whose work invites contemplation of race, gender, class, and global struggles for equality and justice. For over thirty years, her multimedia practice has encompassed photographs, text, fabric, audio, installation, and video, while taking inspiration from traditional narrative forms including social documentary, self-portraiture, and oral history. Her work has been featured in numerous traveling exhibitions and international biennials.
