Access for All Community Day | Art, Nature, and Poetry
Join us at the Museum as we explore connections between artists and the environment through interactive activities. In aligning with National Poetry Month, we will also be offering poetry writing prompts for families that take inspiration from artworks on view.
You and your family can enjoy Free Admission all day once a month, thanks to generous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
Planned workshops and activities:
10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. | Drop-in artmaking in Studio A
4 mini Earth Day stations with Joan Shackford: In considering what materials we use for artmaking, this workshop makes use of recycled materials such as cardboard in creating artworks.
- EARTH DAY COLLAGE - Create a tissue paper collage of the Earth. There will be a sample of a collage as well as a simple graphic showing continents, etc. Good for young ages.
- WATER CYCLE BEAD BRACELETS - Assemble a pony bead pipe cleaner bracelet symbolizing the order of the water cycle in nature. Participants will also receive a handout with a water cycle graphic & bead legend.
- BIRD ART - Paint a nature scene of a bird in a tree using acrylic paints.
- LIDZIE FRIENDS - Create a cute little figure out of recycled materials, starting with a drink cup lid and drinking straw legs & arms.
11 a.m.-12 p.m. | Sketching with Exhibiting Artist John Hitchcock
Experience a rare opportunity to be led through a sketching exercise with distinguished artist John Hitchcock as he introduces his installation, Impact vs Influence, and reflects back on memories of his Comanche grandmother encouraging him to draw and design. This experience is perfect for sketchers and artists of all abilities and experience levels.
- All ages; limited capacity of 25 (separate registration is required)
- Sketchbooks and pencils will be provided for registrants

11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. & 12:45-1:30 p.m. | Guided family tour
Engage with works of art through poetry writing activities in select galleries.
- These tours are designed for intergenerational conversations and activities - parents/caretakers are encouraged to be active participants
- Limited capacity of 20 (children ages 5+ plus at least 1 adult) - There will be a sign up sheet at the Museum on the day of the event
All Day | Makerspace Activity: Nevelson - “the original recycler”
Hands-on art activity in the Stanley Black & Decker Makerspace, inspired by the artist Louise Nevelson.
