ABOUT THE EVENT

Homeschool Days

 —

Homeschool Days are back! Families learning from home are invited to meet with a Museum Educator once a month over Zoom to participate in a guided virtual tour and art activity. Each month, students will focus on a different theme from the Museum's collection. Each month's supply lists will be posted in advance and comprise basic art and household materials. Families who purchase the 3-month package will have access to a Google Classroom page where a Museum Educator will post follow up activities and resources, as well as provide feedback to students.

Ages 5-13

Art for Change
Friday, October 16

In this first virtual Homeschool Day, students will look with a Museum Educator at works from the special exhibition, Some Day is Now, to consider how words applied with art elements and design principles can inspire and inform people of important causes. Students will then be guided to design a statement poster that focuses on an issue they are passionate about. When completed, students can display the posters in their windows at home!

Materials:

  • heavy paper or poster
  • pencil
  • markers or crayons
  • tape
  • Optional: paint and paintbrush, ruler, wooden stick or skewer

Storytelling in Art
Friday, November 20

Students will observe art's powerful ability to convey stories across history and cultures. During a virtual gallery tour, students will connect their observations of artworks to story elements-- character, setting, and plot-- to uncover several tales in the Museum's collection. Afterward, students will construct unique narrative collage books using magazines and newspapers clippings, and, of course, their imagination!

Materials:

  • paper
  • magazines
  • newspapers
  • scissors
  • glue
  • markers or crayons
  • pencil
  • stapler

Dream Drawing
Friday, December 18

Homeschool families will explore the magical and bizarre world of dreams. In a virtual gallery tour led by a Museum Educator, students will compare artistic depictions of dreams, from nightmares to surreal encounters, across centuries and styles. After, students will make one of their own dreams come to life in a drawing activity.

Materials:

  • paper
  • pencil
  • colored construction paper (optional)
  • markers or crayons
  • glue
