Shinique Smith Bio
Shinique Smith (born in 1971) is a painter and sculptor originally from Baltimore and now based in Los Angeles. She is known for her large-scale abstract works of calligraphy, textiles, and collage, which convey statements of personal expression, energy, history, and identity. Smith received a BFA (1992) and MFA (2003) from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University & The Museum School in 2000. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at numerous museums and galleries, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, Denver Art Museum, MOMA PS1, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., The Studio Museum of Harlem, the Whitney, and others.
