The Artist / El artista:

Pablo Delano was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After high school, he relocated to the U.S. east coast to study art. In 1979, he moved to New York City, where he pursued a career as a painter, but then turned to photography. Substantial projects included commissions from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum. He is the author of several books of photography including In Trinidad (2008) and Hartford Seen (2020), praised as “the first art photography book to focus on Connecticut's capital.” The Museum of the Old Colony, Delano’s conceptual art piece in response to the colonial rule of Puerto Rico by the U.S., was first exhibited in 2016 but has grown to include not only appropriated historical images but also tableaus of found objects as well as video art. In 2024, it was exhibited at the 60^th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. Delano holds an M.F.A. in painting from Yale University. He serves as the Charles A. Dana Professor of Fine Arts at Trinity College and was a co-founder of Trinity’s Center for Caribbean Studies.

Amanda J. Guzmán, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in anthropology and the co-director of the Center for Caribbean Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. She specializes in museum anthropology focusing on the history of collecting and exhibiting Puerto Rico. Guzmán was a member of the 2024–2025 inaugural cohort of Rooted + Relational research initiative around the theme of “Archives, Memory, & the Present Past of Puerto Rico” at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College. Her research has been supported by the National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Museum of Natural History. Guzmán serves as a board member on the Council for Museum Anthropology and the vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the Stowe Center for Literary Activism.

Dr. Elena Marie Rosario is a public historian from Hartford, Connecticut, and an assistant professor of history at Fairfield University. She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan. Her dissertation project, “Puerto Rican Hartford: A Public History,” explores the history of Puerto Rican tobacco migration, settlement, and community formation in twentieth-century Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Rosario’s research interests include labor, migration, education, urban development, and social movements. Her research has received support from the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. Moreover, in recognition of her contributions to shaping Connecticut’s history, Dr. Rosario was named as one of Connecticut Explored’s 20 for 20 Game Changers.
