Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro was born and raised in the city of Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas. Before traveling to Venezuela in 1852, he had already made many drawings of sailing vessels at the free ports of Charlotte Amalie, the city’s daily life, and its local people. In 1855 he settled permanently in France, where he produced Cove with Sailboat, which depicts the Caribbean coast of Saint Thomas.
