Gary Simmons Bio
Gary Simmons (born April 14, 1964) is an artist from New York City and now based in Los Angeles. His work incorporates a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, music, and interactive installations, but he is best known for his “erasure drawings.” His work explores the themes of race, society, culture, and identity through a lens of politics and memory by using stereotypical imagery from American pop culture. In 1988, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. He received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1990. His work has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world.
