Job Title: Contractual Educator/Teaching Artist
Job Status: Contractual
Honorarium: Dependent on program
The New Britain Museum of American Art is currently accepting applications for dynamic and creative Teaching Artists to work as contractual art educators inside and outside of the Museum on a per diem basis. The Teaching Artist/educator will be responsible for working with Museum staff to develop and facilitate art-based programs including guided gallery conversations, artmaking workshops, and gallery + studio activities for a wide range of audiences. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in art and education, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse participants.
Responsibilities:
Works directly with Museum staff to deliver learning programs that align with the Museum's exhibitions, collection, and artworks on view
Delivers facilitated explorations of artworks and ideas in the galleries, offsite, or in a studio, maintaining a high quality of customer service and professionalism in all environments
Facilitates hands-on studio sessions, workshops, and other activities.
Visits classrooms in CT schools to deliver learning programs
Reports on and documents programs, including attendance numbers, participant feedback, and observational notes
Prepare and maintain art supplies and materials for classes/workshops
Welcomes and greets visitors to the Museum and provides information and assistance where required.
Contributes to research and writing of resources and interpretive materials.
Attends exhibition walkthroughs, meetings, and other training sessions as required.
Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
Requirements:
Strong knowledge of or interest in learning more about American art, ideas, and art practices
Undergraduate degree in art history, art education, studio art, related field, or equivalent experience
Demonstrated ability in guiding participants in discussions on art history, artists’ processes, research, and art communities
Prior experience teaching arts-based education in a range of settings including museums, cultural institutions, schools, or community centers
Familiar with a range of strategies and techniques to engage and facilitate observational, thematic, and activity-based learning including experience in facilitating and working with a variety of art techniques and mediums
Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment for all participants
Willingness and ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the Learning and Engagement department to prepare resources and materials for program activities
Strong knowledge of art techniques, art history, and contemporary art practices
Ability to facilitate artmaking workshops across a broad range of art materials and practices
Ability to work on a per diem basis, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings
