COVID-19: Health and Safety Updates

NBMAA COVID Policies as of 04/01/2022

Face coverings are strongly encouraged, but optional for museum guests visiting the galleries on a self-guided tour.

Masks are still REQUIRED for any gathering of 5 or more, including:

  • Docent Guided tours
  • Self-guided group tours
  • School groups
  • Studio classes
  • Programs/lectures
  • Meetings
  • Performances
  • NBMAA-hosted social events (events with food & beverage service will still require proof of vaccination upon arrival. See below)

A signed physician’s note is required to be considered exempt from museum mask policy for groups; Museum staff will not ask guests what the specific condition is, but documentation from medical provider must be presented upon arrival.

Visitor tip: Data shows that 3-5 PM are the quietest hours in the galleries and that Tuesday is the quietest day with the exception of morning groups.

*Museum staff are also permitted the option of wearing masks (or not) at their workstations during public hours. Mask policies for general admission visitors and staff are subject to change without prior notice, in accordance with regional Covid-19 levels, based upon data provided the federal Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.


All staff, volunteers, vendors (including contract workers and maintenance vendors), and those entering the building for meetings are also required to be fully vaccinated. A signed vaccination attestation with photocopied vaccination card or printout from a medical provider, or an individual’s state vaccine registry attached must be submitted upon acceptance of contract/project agreement. Entry/participation will be denied to those who do not provide the documentation as required.

VISITOR VACCINATION POLICY - for events serving food and drinks:

Guests will need to be fully vaccinated (as defined below) with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine in order to be permitted to attend events serving food and drinks at NBMAA.

  • Proof of vaccination and matching photo ID will be required upon entry into the venue in the form of a physical vaccination card, a digital copy on a mobile device, a printout from a medical provider, or an individual’s state vaccine registry.
  • Patrons or visitors who are not vaccinated (including those under age 12) must prove a negative COVID-19 test before entering the venue.

Acceptable negative results must be from CDC approved:

Rapid Antigen tests within 48 hours of performance time or

PCR tests within 72 hours of performance time

Self-administered or at-home COVID-19 test results will not be accepted. 

Acceptable results will need to be displayed upon entry into the venue either digitally on a mobile device or printed.
